Sometimes kneeling is seen as the appropriate response and sometimes standing is. In church you kneel during prayers and stand during hymns. To do that the other way round would be seen as disrespectful despite no obvious reason for that. That said I think kneeling rather than sitting was a smart move for two reasons.
