People have given lots of mixed reviews on both brands. It seems that both M65 Field Jackets by both brands are made in China (According to online reviews). As you state the M65 and current day Brit field (combat) jackets have/had two different purposes. The Brit jackets tend to be a lighter-weight (material) over-garment and pocket carrier as opposed to a well-fitting field jacket. (The Brit is meant to fit over body armour! whereas '60's/70's body armour (the flak jacket) went over the M65).

Best coat out there. Have lots of coats but the M65 is very well thought out. Advantages are: waterproof, warm, windproof, liner that can be worn as a separate coat, lots of pockets, very sturdy & won't melt near a fire, get the fur trimmed hood. The M65 is more a jacket system than just a coat.
Propper's M65 Field Coat is available in the classic olive as well as black and woodland camo. Sizes run from small up to 4XL. A note on sizing, I found the jacket to run a full size large. I normally wear a 2XL and found the XL to be fine in this jacket. So, if in doubt, I'd order down a size.

Try Cockpit USA. They build every jacket to mil spec, and have an M-51 as well as an M-65 availible, both of which can be used with or without the removable liner (sold separately). Their American made pieces are pricey, but having handled actual vintage M-51 jackets, if they really do build to the old mil spec the damn jacket will outlast you.
